MENTOR PETRELA, MD, PHD (Albania)
CHAIRMAN OF NEUROSURGERY SERVICE, UHC “MOTHER THERESA”, TIRANA
“World Academy of Neurological Surgery”, elected him one of the 100 best surgeons in the world.
Prof. Petrela is graduated in Faculty of Medicine, Tirana University in 1973.
During 1974-75 he was specialized in neurology and worked as a neurologist in the Hospital of Burrel during 1975-77.
Prof. Petrela started specialization in neurosurgery, to complete his studies in France with the Academician R. Houdart and Professors J. Cophignon and A. Rey.
With Prof. Bernard George he shared the same internship at Lariboisiere Hospital of Paris.
Prof. Petrela is a neurosurgeon dedicated at the:
microvascular surgery,
cranial base,
deep seated lesions,
spinal cord,
peripheral nerves, etc.
Strongly influenced by the “Neurosurgeon of Neurosurgeons” Prof. Gazi Yasargil of Albanian origin Prof. Petrela implements the microsurgical techniques in extenso since 1979.
From 1991, Prof. Petrela holds the post of the Chairman of Neurosciences at UHC “Mother Theresa”.
From 1993, he is a Honorary Member of the Société Française de Neurologie;.
From 1996, he is the Chairman of Neurosurgery Service at UHC Mother Theresa;. In 1997, he passed CNU in Paris and became Professeur des Universites-Praticien Hospitalier, Paris, France.
As President, he made possible the membership of the Albanian Society of Neurology to the EFNS and the Albanian Society of Neurosurgery to the World Federation of Neurological Societies, Child Neurology Society and European Federation of Neurosurgeons.
Prof. Petrela is actually President of the Albanian Society of Neurosurgeons. From 1999 to 2002, Prof. Petrela was Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Tirana.
He is invited lecturer in universities of Paris, Milan, New-York and Geneva.
